Our Work
Our Mission
The Ripple Effects strives to work alongside Ixil people most affected by extreme poverty in order to make sustainable changes that empower and uplift the community as a whole.
Our focus is on basic needs to ensure people in the Ixil region have the opportunity to uplift themselves and sustainably access clean drinking water, healthy homegrown food, and clean burning stoves that prevent respiratory illness and severe burns.
Our Programs
Clean Water
Without water there cannot be life. In the Ixil area clean water is often not available and people walk long distances to find enough to survive. Running water in a home provides security in the form of better health and wellbeing. When TRE builds a spring water or rainwater catchment system, running water improves the lives of many.
Home Gardens
Malnutrition and hunger is a part of daily life for many Ixil and with costs of groceries out of reach for many people, gardening is an age old, proven way to provide nutritious food. TRE offers training and resources to people that desire to cultivate a home garden to combat malnutrition in children and adults alike.
Stoves
50% of people on the planet rely on wood or coal to cook their food. The smoke from fires built on dirt floors in the home carry pollutants that cause respiratory illnesses and eye infections. Children often are severely burned when they fall into cooking fires. In response, TRE’s local team builds wood burning stoves that eject smoke from the home and save fuel.
Farm Animals
Protein is highly lacking in local diets and animals have are an age old and reliable source of nutrition. Small farm animals like chickens, ducks, or pigs provide a secure source of protein and can be cared for by people and saved for when they are needed. TRE provides resources and education on animal care.
Social Outreach
The consequences of extreme poverty are the reality of today for many Ixil people. A meal that could save a life, a blanket that keeps a woman and her children warm, or simple shelter from the elements are important and sometimes can’t wait. TRE strives to offer sustainable aid whenever possible and also is ready to support our neighbors when their need is most dire.
