Stoves Program
Description of Program
The Poorest families in the Ixil Region of Guatemala still cook their meals over open fires on dirt floors. These homes are full of toxic smoke that cause respiratory illnesses, children are more likely to get burns from open flame on the ground, and these open fires require more firewood, which as a result the people of the community are having to walk further up the mountain to carry home.
At TRE we’ve designed a clean efficient wood cook stove that fits the culture and needs of the Ixil people. Clean and efficient means less firewood and less smoke in the homes. By providing families with clean burning cook stoves, we help reduce respiratory diseases, severe burns, and the amount of firewood needed. Families receiving stoves pitch in with labor and sand.
